The company’s flagship product, Proloquo2Go®, is an award-winning Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) application for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch that provides a “voice” for people who have difficulty speaking or cannot speak at all.

The history of AssistiveWare begins in 1996 when Giesbert Nijhuis, a friend of AssistiveWare's CEO, David Niemeijer, found himself in need of an on-screen keyboard after he became paralyzed from the neck down in a car accident. David took on the challenge, planting AssistiveWare’s roots firmly in the assistive technology industry by becoming the first company to deliver universal access to Mac OS X with the launch of KeyStrokes™, a virtual on-screen keyboard. Giesbert, in turn, designed the application icon for KeyStrokes as well as for several of the later AssistiveWare products.

In 2012 AssistiveWare accomplished another significant industry milestone creating the first genuine children’s Text to Speech voices. Developed in collaboration with Acapela Group, this groundbreaking project was the first of its kind in the industry.
